Name Numerology: The Number in Your Name, Explained (Expression & Heart Number)
A plain name numerology calculator you can do by hand: the letter chart, your Expression number, your Heart number and what each tends to mean.
By Velanomi editors · numbers calculated the way we describe in how we calculate · for you to think with, not advice.
A name numerology calculator turns each letter of your full birth name into a number from 1 to 9, adds them and reduces the total. All the letters give your Expression number, how people see you. The vowels alone give your Heart number, what you want underneath. The consonants give your Personality number, the door you show the world.
Your birthday is a number you were given. Your name is a number you were given too, only it was chosen by someone who was thinking about you before they had met you. Name numerology is the quiet idea that those letters carry a shape.
You do not need an app to find it. A pencil and the chart below are enough. If you would rather not add, the quiz does the sums and shows them. But doing it once by hand is worth it, the way it is worth knowing how to boil an egg even if you rarely do.
The letter chart
This is the Pythagorean chart, the one most Western numerologists use and the one we use on our calculation page. The alphabet runs 1 to 9, then starts again.
| Value | Letters |
|---|---|
| 1 | A, J, S |
| 2 | B, K, T |
| 3 | C, L, U |
| 4 | D, M, V |
| 5 | E, N, W |
| 6 | F, O, X |
| 7 | G, P, Y |
| 8 | H, Q, Z |
| 9 | I, R |
Vowels are A, E, I, O, U. Y counts as a vowel when it is not next to another vowel, so the Y in Emily is a vowel and the Y in Maya is not. That one rule trips up most online calculators, and it is why two sites can give you two different Heart numbers.
Which name to use
Use the name on your birth certificate, all of it, middle names included. That is the one you started with. Married names, nicknames and the name you go by at work can be read too, but they are a second layer, not the first.
If your name has accents, we read the plain Latin letter underneath: é becomes E, ø becomes O. If you were adopted or renamed very young, use the earliest name you know, or the one that feels most like yours.
Worked example
Let us read a made-up name, Emily Rose Bennett, so you can see every step. We reduce each name on its own, then add the three results, which keeps master numbers like 11 visible when they appear in one name.
| Name | Letters and values | Sum | Reduced |
|---|---|---|---|
| EMILY | E5 M4 I9 L3 Y7 | 28 → 10 | 1 |
| ROSE | R9 O6 S1 E5 | 21 | 3 |
| BENNETT | B2 E5 N5 N5 E5 T2 T2 | 26 | 8 |
| Expression | 1 + 3 + 8 | 12 | 3 |
Her Expression number is 3. Now the vowels only; the Y in Emily counts, because it sits next to the L.
| Name | Vowels | Sum | Reduced |
|---|---|---|---|
| EMILY | E5 I9 Y7 | 21 | 3 |
| ROSE | O6 E5 | 11 | 11, kept whole |
| BENNETT | E5 E5 | 10 | 1 |
| Heart | 3 + 11 + 1 | 15 | 6 |
Her Heart number is 6, with a master 11 inside the middle name. And the consonants: Emily gives M4 L3, which is 7; Rose gives R9 S1, which is 10, which is 1; Bennett gives B2 N5 N5 T2 T2, which is 16, which is 7. So 7 + 1 + 7 is 15, which is 6. Her Personality number is also 6.
So Emily, on paper, is a 3 in how she comes across, a 6 in what she wants, and a 6 at the door. A bright, chatty surface over a deep wish for home and people. That is a lot to get from sixteen letters, and it is a starting point, not a sentence.

Show me my numberWhat the Expression number tends to mean
The Expression number is all the letters. It is the number people meet: your talents, your manner, how you go about things when nobody is telling you how.
| Expression | The name tends to say | A small picture |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Built to begin: initiative, courage, self-direction | The first one to stand up in a meeting |
| 2 | The fine adjuster: diplomacy, detail, harmony | The one who notices the chair is in the wrong place |
| 3 | The natural voice: creativity, charm, words | The friend who tells the story best |
| 4 | The steady hand: method, practicality, endurance | The one the plan can lean on |
| 5 | The quick study: versatility, persuasion, pace | First to try the new café |
| 6 | The harmoniser: nurture, beauty, duty | The room is warmer when she is in it |
| 7 | The quiet mind: analysis, precision, judgement | Trusted for being right, slowly |
| 8 | The organiser of means: ambition, capability | Handed the keys, and grows into them |
| 9 | The broad heart: idealism, artistry, generosity | Drawn to work that serves many |
| 11 | The inspired voice: insight, idealism, nerves | Feels every draught in the room, and lifts it anyway |
| 22 | The architect: building at scale, endurance | Prefers the durable fix to the quick one |
| 33 | The devoted voice: nurture and expression together | Asked for guidance, again and again |
A 1 name carries the shape of a starting line. You tend to express yourself best when you set the terms. A 2 name expresses itself through connection and calibration, and the gift is precision in relationships, with the risk of putting your own preferences last. A 3 name has ease in it: words, warmth, aesthetics, with follow-through as the muscle to build.
A 4 name is craft and consistency, the person who finishes what others began. A 5 name is adaptability and appetite; commitment is what turns range into mastery. A 6 name is service and a strong sense of what is right, with perfectionism about other people as the habit to watch. A 7 name is investigation and refinement. An 8 name is competence and command. A 9 name is breadth and empathy, and follow-through keeps the ideals off the shelf.
What the Heart number tends to mean
The Heart number, which older books call the Soul Urge, is the vowels only. Vowels are the breath in a word. This is the number of what you want underneath, the thing you would not necessarily say at a dinner party.
A Heart 1 wants room to decide for herself; being managed tends to feel like a slow leak. A Heart 2 wants to be met halfway and tends to smooth things before they fray. A Heart 3 wants to make and share, and being unread tends to feel like a dimming. A Heart 4 wants ground under her feet, a clear plan and an honest ledger.
A Heart 5 wants the door left open. A Heart 6 wants a place and people to care for, and feeling unneeded tends to be harder than feeling overworked. A Heart 7 wants to know how things really work, and to be left alone long enough to find out. A Heart 8 wants to see her effort become something substantial. A Heart 9 wants her life to be of use to more than herself.
Most women find the Heart number is the one that lands. The Expression number describes what other people already tell you. The Heart number describes the thing you knew and had not said. If you keep noticing 1212 on clocks while you are reading this, take it as a small nudge to move, then listen, the way the Heart number asks.
The Personality number, briefly
The consonants give the Personality number, the door you show the world before anyone comes in. A Personality 7 reads as observant and a little apart. A Personality 3 reads as bright company. A Personality 8 reads as quietly in charge whether or not she is.
When your Personality and Heart numbers differ a lot, say a reserved 7 at the door and a warm 6 inside, people tend to misjudge you at first and be pleasantly surprised later. That gap is not a problem. It is worth knowing about, so you can open the door a little wider when it matters.
A note on karmic debt numbers
If a name sums to 13, 14, 16 or 19 before it is reduced, some numerologists flag a karmic debt. In our method these are subjects, not punishments. A 13 tends to be about steady effort instead of shortcuts. A 14 is about freedom spent carefully. A 16 is about honest relationships over image. A 19 is about learning to accept help.
What to do with this
Do the sum once, properly, with your full birth name, and write the three numbers on the same page as your Life Path and your birthday number. Then look at the gaps. Where the Expression and the Heart agree, you probably feel fairly at ease with how you come across. Where they disagree, you may have felt for years that people get you slightly wrong, and now you have a plain reason for it.
Then use the Heart number as permission. If it is a 7 and you have been saying yes to every invitation, it may help to say no to one this week. If it is a 3 and you have not made anything in months, it may help to make something small and show one person. If it is a 6, make sure somebody is looking after you too.
And hold the name lightly. A name is a reading, not a rule. If your married name feels more like you than your birth name, read that one as well, and notice what changed. The number describes the name. You are the person standing behind it.
If you want all of this read together, in plain words, the quiz takes your name and your birthday and does every sum for you. The first reading is free.
FAQ
Which name do I use for name numerology, my birth name or my married name?
Start with your full birth name, all the parts. Your married name or the name you go by can be read as a second layer, and the differences between the two are often the interesting part.
Is Y a vowel or a consonant?
Both, depending on where it sits. We treat Y as a vowel when it is not next to another vowel. So the Y in Lynn and Emily is a vowel, and the Y in Maya or Joyce is a consonant. This is the most common reason two calculators disagree.
Why does this calculator give me a different Expression number from another one?
Usually one of three things: the other site reduces the whole name at once rather than each name separately, it treats Y differently, or it uses the Chaldean chart, where letters run 1 to 8. We use the Pythagorean chart and reduce each name first, so master numbers inside a single name stay visible.
What is the difference between the Expression number and the Heart number?
Expression is every letter: how you tend to come across and what you are good at. Heart, or Soul Urge, is the vowels alone: what you want underneath. Personality is the consonants, the first impression.
Can my name number be 11, 22 or 33?
Yes. If a name or the final sum lands on 11, 22 or 33 we keep it whole, because those are master numbers in our method. An 11 name carries an amplified sensitivity, a 22 builds at scale, a 33 is nurture and expression together. Read the master number and the plain number beneath it, and take whichever fits the day.
